Assessors wishing to improve their assessment skills:

The Internal Summative Assessment Compendium is for use by examiners who wish to improve their skills and capabilities. The case studies below show how an assistant examiner and a senior examiner can use the Compendium.

Together the Compendium and Framework can help examiners to devlop their knowledge and skills and to develop an overview of the entire assessment process. Senior examiners may wish to use these documents as part of their training for Team Leaders or to keep a check on their own work.

Case study

A new Assistant Examiner may well be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of material that lies behind the assessment that is being marked. The Framework highlights all of the stages that were gone through before the particualr assessment paper or task was produced. This might well explain why some decisions were taken about questions or tasks and also shed some light on the thought processes of the Principal Examiner responsible for the assessment. The Compendium builds on the Framework and provides links to detailed resources which can be used to improve their own knowledge.

A senior examiner will find that the Framework can be used to track processes during the selection and preparation of assessment materials. A senior examiner will have responsibility for a team of examiners and so may well have to produce training materials, especially for new examiners. The Compendium highlights all of the elements of the assessment process and indicates where resources which could be used for training are available.
