Scrutineer
Responsibilities
A scrutineer is responsible for checking question papers or assessment tasks and their associated mark schemes after these materials have been reviewed by the question paper evaluation committee for a specification and then type-set. The scrutineer is required to ensure that the question paper or assessment task can be completed using the information and materials provided and in the time allowed for the examination, and that the level of demand of the assessment is appropriate for the candidates for whom it is intended.
Role
Scrutineers normally do this by working through the assessment without reference to the mark scheme, putting themselves in the place of a candidate. They then check the associated mark scheme to ensure that it matches the question paper ie that the marks on the paper match those in the mark scheme and that the suggested responses are appropriate.
Having reviewed the materials, the scrutineer writes a report for the awarding body officer, which may lead to revisions to the assessment materials.
