Chair of the CIEA calls for A Level Resits Limit

CIEA

Lord Sutherland, Chair of the CIEA, today called for a limit to the number of resists candidates could take at AS and A level.

In a move designed to bring comparability and equity to the current examination system which allows candidates to sit an unlimited number of unit and A level retakes in order to improve grades, speaking to the Independent, Lord Sutherland states "is not a very sensible way of assessing a student's performance". Lord Sutherland raises his concerns that the credibility of the exam system could be questioned if there is not a limit on the number of resits a student can take.

Research conducted in 2007 by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority has shown that some students have been known to resit an examination up to six times. The research also shows support from teachers and senior managers to cap the number of resits a student can take.
