Assessment still inconsistent in schools, claim Ofsted

In their annual report, published in November 2009, Ofsted are still claiming that there is a long way to go before assessment is truly embedded and consistent across all subject areas in all schools in England.

Her Majesty's Chief Inspector, Christine Gilbert, writes. 'Effective assessment for learning, in which teachers rapidly adjust what they are doing in response to their assessment of pupils' learning, is a vital ingredient in good teaching. However, it is still not consistently embedded across phases and subjects and it remains a comparative weakness in provision.'

In line with the rising importance of assessment as part of good teaching and learning, Ofsted have increased the number of references to this crucial area of education reform. This year there were more than 143 references to educational assessment compared with 97 references in their last annual report.

Additionally Ofsted found that assessment knowledge is under-developed among newly-qualified teachers taking initial teacher training courses where '
Trainees' use of assessment is the least well developed of their competencies and this is critical for achieving good progress for pupils'.

David Wright, CEO of the institute, commented that 'It would appear the teaching profession can make marked improvements in the quality of provision by driving up consistency in good assessment practice, exactly the area of work that the Institute can support, through access to assessment tools and training.'
