Institute seeks Royal Charter

The Institute of Educational Assessors intends to apply for a Royal Charter and is consulting with stakeholders so seek their views regarding the proposal.

A Royal Charter will allow the IEA to be seen to be on a par with other established institutes such as the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants or the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. It will allow the IEA to be seen as a credible institute with the support of the educational community in our aim of improving the quality of assessment in centres of learning.

As part of its application for a Royal Charter, the IEA also intends to hold a register of those members who are committed to achieving high standards in educational assessment. These registered educational assessors will commit to undertaking continuing professional development in line with the IEA's Professional Framework of Assessment. Once established, these registered members will be eligible to use the designation of Chartered Assessor.

A Royal Charter will enable the IEA to develop the concept of a Chartered Assessor, individuals who can provide support within learning centres to improve the quality of assessment, as well as operating at a professional level as external assessors to support summative assessment.
