OLM Training Programme 2010

OLM training

The Oral Language Modifier (OLM) is a role created to provide a reasonable adjustment in examinations for candidates who require a level of language support beyond that provided by a reader. The events in 2010 were held in London, York, Birmingham and Bristol In total 93 delegates were trained in the processes of modifying examinations for those who may require this level of support.

The CIEA ran and organised four training events in February and March 2010. The format was similar to that in 2008 and 2009, but there have been amendments, as one would expect following any pilot.

The structure of the day looked at the following issues:

  • Preparing the learner to become a candidate.
  • Conducting the examination and modifying the grammar of the carrier language without invalidating the examination. This included simplifying the language structure of the carrier language, avoiding the use of the passive voice and avoiding devaluing the impact of the command verb.
  • Feeding back to those who need to know: the teachers in the institution, the SENCO, the examiner, the awarding body and JCQ

After each input, there was an opportunity afforded to each delegate to use the new information with which they were provided and putting into practice newly learned skills.

Each delegate was assessed on how well they showed an understanding of the issues in each of the above areas, a letter was sent to each delegate, along with an attendance certificate. Details of the assessments were sent to JCQ for monitoring purposes. A final report was submitted to Ofqual with recommendations for the future.

Evaluations

Finally, delegates were encouraged to feed back to the CIEA team on the outcomes of the day. Below is a list of some of the comments that were made:
